Mid-scale exploration of the terms defined in failed containers, which manifests as a temporary pop-up bathroom. The use of ready-made architectural components (CMU, glass block, prefabricated laminate stalls, 1” plastic blinds) allows the installation to exist within the subconscious space of its site and function without instruction.
One toilet is left out of its stall to create an alternate “flex” stall for unprogrammed use. The partitions of the flex stall are routed to fit a glassed opening covered by standard 1” blinds on either side, permitting a physical operation of consenting to see and/or be seen. The flex stall is “flagged” by glass block and mirror on either side of its exterior.
The intervention is sited along a mid-block pedestrian corridor connecting Yale’s Old Campus to the primarily residential Dwight St. Pedestrian flow is in the East-West direction, passing in front of the most public face of the exhibit, which is constructed of CMU to match adjacent buildings within the corridor.
